The Mental Health Consequences of Climate Change: A Public Health Approach to Advocacy
March 9 @ 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm
The World Health Organization had described climate change as an urgent global health challenge that requires prioritization now and in the decades to come. Climate change affects the social determinants of health. Eco-distress and the mental health effects of the trauma associated with climate change are negatively impacting health outcomes. Psychiatrists have a unique opportunity to educate about the mental health effects of climate change and advocate for policies that will support a public health response to this growing crisis.
Dr. Koss will meet with early career psychiatrists who are members of the Climate Psychiatry Alliance and provide an overview of effective advocacy strategies, including the importance of education and outreach, tips for building constituent relationships with lawmakers, and strategies for working in coalitions.
