Warrior Moms – “The Role of Parent as Mental Health Advocate”
October 9, 2018 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
One in five children experience a significant mental illness that interferes with their development. Of these children, 80% are unable to access mental health treatment. Parents encounter multiple obstacles, including limited resources, stigma, and lack of insurance coverage for mental illness. Parents of children with mental illness frequently need to advocate on behalf of their children in order to access mental health services and school-based accommodations. Dr. Koss will review strategies to assist parents in developing skills they need to effectively advocate in multiple arenas, including schools and child-serving systems. Dr. Koss will also discuss the importance of legislative advocacy and describe ways in which parents can share their stories to engage and educate lawmakers about the importance of improving access to quality, evidence-based mental health treatment.
